What causes poor tactile feedback in membrane switches (potato chip switches)?
2020.09.11 1594

After assembly, the tactile feedback of membrane switches is not particularly satisfactory. What might be causing this?

Below, we (Dongguan Hongmao Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.) offer a brief analysis. The tactile feel of dome switches is determined by the ratio of actuation force to spring force: tactile feel ratio = (Actuation Force - Spring Force) / Actuation Force. A low ratio results in poor tactile feedback, which can be resolved by increasing this ratio. The switch height also influences feel, typically following the order: cross-shaped > triangular > circular. For higher tactile requirements, cross-shaped dome switches are recommended. The tactile response is further influenced by the size of the silicone keypad's contact point. Excessively large contact areas can adversely affect the feel. Additionally, assembly plays a role: pressing the exact centre yields optimal tactile feedback, whereas off-centre mounting significantly compromises the response.
